Whether you are a “green” mama or not, cloth diapering is not only cheaper, but it is safer on your baby’s skin. I will save you all the reasons why some choose commercial diapers versus cloth diapering. There was a small amount of information available when I purchased my cloth diapering supplies many years ago, but none the less, I have no regrets in choosing to cloth diaper my kiddos. I will keep it simple and tell you what I prefer and how I organize that part of my life.

I have cloth diapered for many years now and have a stash that I am comfortable with. What I have purchased over the years still looks practically new and I do not regret investing in what I own today. I hope this information is helpful to you if you are deciding on what to do in your family.

There are three basic styles of cloth diapers:

Flat

Flat diapers are the classic cotton or hemp rectangle “old fashion” diaper which is folded to fit the baby and secured with diaper pins. These have been around for years and years. Your grandma probably used this type. Today, they have made it easy for us modern mamas with two additional variations on the flat diaper which I think is pretty neat.

  • Pre-fold: includes an extra layer in the center These are my favorite flat diapers.
  • Contoured: Which are similar to pre-folds but more form-fitting. Contours are less bulky under baby clothing.

Flat diapers are the least expensive option. I purchased mine in a bulk order. These diapers require waterproof covers which are available in many different shapes, sizes, and colors for boy and girl. You will also want to purchase something called a “Snappy” for the flat diapers. I have 4 of these. They take the place of pins and I LOVE them!

I store all my cloth diapers, covers, and accessories in tubs

Fitted

Fitted diapers are similar to the contour diapers with a added bonus. The waistband and the leg area have elastic sewn in to provide a snug fit and reduce leakage. Fitted diapers also have built-in closures like snaps and Velcro. This eliminates the need for diaper pins. Fitted diapers require the waterproof outer covers. These diapers are more expensive than flats, but if you like the convenience of the elastic this is a good choice. Either way, you can not go wrong. There are ways of folding the prefolds to prevent leakage if you would rather go the cheapest route.

All-in-Ones

This style has the waterproof cover sewn into the diaper. These are very convenient because only one item is needed for a diaper change. All-in-Ones have snaps or Velcro closures, and are adjustable for any size/age of your child. This style of cloth diaper is the most popular for mama’s on-the-go.

This makes it simple if I am in between potty training and diapering.

Covers

Waterproof covers are used over flat or fitted diapers.

Plastic covers are the least expensive but do not last as long. They eventually crack and for this reason I do not prefer this cover.

Nylon covers are slightly more expensive, lightweight, but less susceptible to tearing. To avoid chafing, be sure the cover has coated elastic around the waist and leg. This is a must in my book if you choose nylon.

Fleece covers are breathable and soft. Lots of different companies make cute fleece covers in all kinds of lovely patterns. Chafing is rare with this option.

Wool covers are now available in many sizes and adorable colors. They are breathable and very comfortable for baby. They are not as waterproof as the plastic covers. On the flip side, they are water-resistant and makes them a winner in my opinion! This choice is a favorite of mine.

Polyester covers are waterproof and long-lasting. They come with a brushed outer finish for a soft texture. This is not my favorite option.

Polyester, wool, and fleece covers also come with snap or Velcro closures. You can put them on without having to pull them up over the feet. This is very helpful when your baby has pants and shoes on. These covers also come in a variety of colors and patterns. It is so much fun to dress them in cute diapers!

prefolds, covers, hand-sewn inserts & liners, all in ones, etc.

Liners

Liners can be added to the diaper or on the inside for extra absorbency. This is very helpful for overnight and nap-time wear. Liners are available in reusable or as the throw-away type. Reusable liners often have a facing of polyester which helps with diaper rash. As you can tell in the picture, You can make your own. You can buy cotton or hemp material and surge them. It is a cheap way to make a lot of liners/inserts.

Inserts

Inserts are pads which can double the absorbency of the diaper. They are thicker than liners, useful for overnight wear, and mamas who are on-the-go.

Proper Care and Laundering

Taking care of your cloth diapers is easier than it used to be. In my opinion, you need to purchase a PUL pail liner and bucket with a fitted lid to place your soiled diapers in. I wash mine every other day. My good friend has a sprayer she attaches to her toilet which I find very handy, but not necessary. I do it the old fashion, rinse-them-in-the-toilet way.

After changing baby, empty the solids into the toilet and throw the diapers into your pail.

Run diapers through a pre-rinse cycle with white vinegar first, set the washing machine on hot water double wash, and double rinse in cold water. That may seem over-kill to some, but it is worth the effort not to pitch your cloth diapers because of the urine smell.

ALWAYS use proper detergent suitable for cloth diapering.

NEVER use bleach.

ALWAYS line dry. Be sure they are dry on the inside before storing away in your drawer.

Sunshine will take stains out of cloth diapers. Once you have washed them and ready to line dry, place them in a window sill in direct sunlight until they are dry. Be careful not to place PUL covers in the sun as they break down eventually.

I find this precious part of motherhood to be an enjoyable season of life. She is the happiest little baby and brings much joy to our home!

God bless all the mamas being so faithful to their families. I pray you find the encouragement you need today. You are doing a mighty work!
